What daily life in NRW actually looks like
Not a tourism brochure. Practical information for you and your family to plan around.
What NRW is
North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany's most populous state and one of its largest logistics and industrial regions, including the Rhine-Ruhr area. Major hubs include Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Duisburg. It is where most of our target roles and employer relationships are based.
Gross versus net salary
The salary written in a job offer is almost always gross, before tax and social insurance. As a rough guide, take-home pay for a single, unmarried person is typically around 60–65% of gross, depending on tax class, health insurance and other deductions. This is an estimate only, not a guarantee, and your personal figure will differ.
What things typically cost
Estimated monthly living costs in NRW are typically €800–€1,200, covering rent, food, transport and insurance, depending on the city and your lifestyle. Rent is not included in your salary unless your specific employer states otherwise in writing.
Accommodation support varies significantly by employer. Some provide free housing, some a housing allowance, and some neither. We confirm the exact arrangement for your specific role before you accept any offer.
Health insurance, registration and tax ID
Within days of arrival, you will register your address with the local authority (Anmeldung), apply for a tax identification number, and enrol in statutory health insurance. These are not optional steps, and most employers expect them to happen quickly.
Transport and daily commuting
NRW has an extensive regional train and bus network. Many logistics sites are on the outskirts of towns, so check the commute to your specific workplace rather than assuming city-centre convenience.
Shift work and workplace expectations
Many logistics roles involve shift work, including early mornings, evenings or rotating patterns. German workplaces tend to value punctuality and direct communication. This can feel different from what you are used to, and it is worth preparing for mentally, not just professionally.
If you are planning to bring family later
Family reunification is possible once you are settled, working and meeting income requirements, usually after some time in employment. The exact rules depend on your visa type and income. We discuss this individually rather than making general promises.
Arrival support
Our Germany office supports you with address registration, opening a bank account, and orientation in your first week. This is part of the process we coordinate directly, not something you are left to figure out alone.
